Well the title explains it all. After using my IBM Thinkpad R50e for almost 3.7 years after
- 10 – 20 times of complete crash downs.
- Backing up and recovering every time.
- Slow system which wouldn’t allow me to use Eclipse
or Dreamweaver or run my fav coldfusion server CF8/Railo 3. - Upgrading my Ram to max 2 gb.
I don’t hate XP but the software’s in this current world has made my laptop work like a 6 moths old Netbook.
All these have forced me to finally try out Ubuntu 9.04 OS instead of XP. All though there was a pretty big learning curve to use Ubuntu but it has been fruitful so far with all my required software running fine without any performance hit. I still have to figure out how to fix the Flash full screen lag issue with Ubuntu 9.04 and my system expect that everything looks gr8.
If you have enough patience, time and old laptop u still want to use please try out Ubuntu out which has gr8 UI.
Thanks to eclipse, cfeclipse, mysql and railo CF engine for their gr8 open source products.

Its not the problem with XP, but with your laptop. All these days most of the softwares are resource hungry that you laptop doesnt have. Its time for you to change laptop anyway.
Partially its true that my laptop doesn’t provide the resources to XP that the software needs. But Ubuntu runs all the software’s I use with out any issues ad my laptop isn’t hot any more.
I’m not a big fan of Linux but if Linux can run all the software that I use without bogging down my system why Can’t XP do it? So as a consumer I choose to run an OS that resolves my issues and most of all I would rather stay with Ubuntu then to buy a new VISTA laptop which is a power hungry like politicians.
you may be right that you got what you wanted without any additional money. But still windows operatings system deserves for the money you pay for it. Better you dont go for vista, but you can definitly try out Windows 7 once its commercially available. you will see the real usability in it.
