Man from Earth – a movie to watch

Man from Earth is one of amazing movies that I have seen in my life.  I’m not even sure how the writer of this movie came with a concept like this when we humans forget what we ate yesterday and don’t know what will happen in the next few days.

It has no action,no graphics just arguments going on between a group of scientist and man that was awesome to watch and listen. Well I’m actually feeling productive after watching such a thought provoking movie.

My mind is already wandering around like crazy, hopefully I will get some sleep.

Its available in Netflix instant stream check it out.

Ravanan a Santosh Sivan Movie

Today I watched Ravanan and my verdict is that it’s a Santosh Sivan movie which should be clearly enjoyed in a big screen not @ home.  Santosh Sivan’s cinematography is @ it’s best and has captured nature @ its best.

I have already mentioned it’s a cinematographers movie and the story line purely based on Ramayana with a little twist for the current age, lets get to the story. Although it’s a know story line and trying to repackage it is quiet hard, but Mani Ratnam has already did this kind of repackaging in a successful way for movies like Thalapathi, Iruvar but this time it wasn’t up to the mark.

Pros:

  1. Cinematography.
  2. Supporting Cast, be it Karthik, Prabhu, Munna, Prithiviraj and Priyamani do their limited roles perfectly.
  3. ARR BGM’s.
  4. Vikram’s acting, not his best though, reminds me of pithamagan.
  5. locations.

Cons:

  1. The most important, you jump in to the movie @ the beginning itself , there is no concept of building up the story. Unless you have the patience to watch the second half, you will be wondering why the hell I came to this movie and wondering if there is any story in the movie.
  2. Suhasini’s dialogues. Sujatha is really missed in this department, he could have pulled off the movie.
  3. Zero comedy, this movie is a total drama. So most people looking for a masala flick, should really stay away.
  4. ARR songs, as if he was sleeping while composing some songs.

The first Con I believe is the reason for all the bad reviews and spreading a bad review about the movie.

Don’t expect a Mani Ratnam movie, then you can enjoy it in theater.

BTW my friends who watched the previous show mentioned it was worst than Aasal movie (all time crap), so I went in to watch a movie worst than Aasal. May be that’s why I liked the movie :)

The Ripple Effect

With the United Progressive Alliance – UPA lead by Congress(I) winning the 2009 Indian parlimentary election with a surprise and its ripple effects has started showing up.

Obviously the first place to feel the effect is the closest to the center that’s Srilanka where BBC has reported that Velupillai Prabhakaran leader of LTTE has been killed. Although it could be rumor as usual but pretty much LTTE will be taken of the equation from now on in Srilanka.

But good news LTTE regrets the loss of innocents life ,not able to protect them any more and willing to silence their guns (nice term indeed).

There above statement is like the saying in tamil

kann ketta pin sooriya namash kaaram

which means Praying to the Sun god after losing the eye.

All mayhem over the weekend..

Update – 05/24/2009:

LTTE has finally accepted that Prabhakaran is dead. Hopefully with the end there will be a better solution in srilanka.

Never ending Surangani..

Some songs just don’t die just like the Batman, spider man or the Friday the 13th movies.

Same like that the Surangani baila song from Srilanka was remixed in tamil in the past and now the Surangani remix by Dinesh Kanagaratnam yet again adapted in tamil movie called ‘taxi TN O7 AL 4777‘ and its one of the best remixes I have listened in recent times.

Surangani tamil remix called Aathichudi  from taxi TN O7 AL 4777.

The original video track was removed from Youtube hence i’m including just the audio track from youtube.

Surangani Remix  by Dinesh. I personally like this one..

Original Surangani sinhala track probably who ever listened to Ceylon radio would know this song.

Original Surangani track adpated by an old tamil movie. Not so great though..

Slumdog Millionaire is Slum

Yes the title says it. Its a really good desi masala movie packed in a nice little tamper proof plastic cup so that it can be cooked instantly in your DVD player.

As I was watching it I was wondering why it got nominated for Grammy and Oscars come on people haven’t you watched a better movie in your language.

I’m still wondering when was the last time Indians talked in Millions we follow the Indian Number system which is lakhs and crores.  The kids playing cricket reminds of  Chennai 28 which was a good movie.

Hell yeah this movie wasn’t  made for Indians it was made for the International community who are curious to know/learn about Mumbai after the November 26,2008 Mumbai attack.

Well there is one thing this movie has is A.R. Rahman but the Jai ho sounds similar to a track from Om Shanti Om and I’m not sure which song it is.

Its good marketing guys but don’t expect this to run this movie in India you know the result.

If only Kamal Hasan learns to market like these guys his Virumandi one of the best movies I have ever seen would have won a national award at least.

If you liked this movie then try watching yet another master piece called Pesum Padam/Pushpak from Kamal.

Recession hurts Super Star

Not even Super Star movies are not safe from recession.

Shankar should rather spend more time on a good story rather than spending so much money on a single movie almost 120 crores.

Well Sun TV is going to run the promo although months together.  Remember Thambiku Entha ooru which gets re-telecast n number of times :) .

Well I have updated my wordpress theme to the holiday mood.

Stupid IE is screwing the layout will fix itwhen I get time. Until then use any other browser than IE.

Sabapathy one of a kind

There are some movies that you can watch n number times because they are so well made and the plot of the movie still applies today. Sabapathy released in 1941 falls under that category and a precursor to all comedy movies in tamil.

Most of the new comedians mostly take a thread from this movie and repackage to the current trend. One simple example is the repackaging of the master servant switching places story one example I could remember right away is Ullathai alithaa which was big hit in 90′s.

Some other surprising things I noticed are:

  1. People bribed even before India got Independence and it was even shown in movies. So bribe was something that we had it not something we generated after independence. Still we haven’t fixed it thats the sad part. Almost 70 years of promises by politicians.
  2. Tanglish was born and brought up even before the Dravidian parties was formed and it flourished. E.g ‘ivan nusiance thanga mudiyala sir’,'vera enna seilam brother’,'brother ithalam ippadi vaika’. The percentage is still low but Tanglish had it roots long before.
  3. Sabapathy father complains about his son not knowing to right 2 pages in tamil and my dad shares the same feeling. View @ 19.00 Minutes in Video 1.

70 years of time has passed but people haven’t changed.

What ever may be this is one good movie that I can enjoy watching any time any where rather than watching the new ones.

Please watch the movie if you get a chance.

Man of simple words

I was watching this movie Iru vallavargal which I watched assuming that the Paradee Kanney song was from this movie. Its a typical 60′s masala tamil movie which is way better than current masala movies.

But I was quite amazed with Kannadasan lyrics for the sad situation. Its just 4 lines and about 25 words but he brings in the whole concept of life in to that. These concepts, ideas and words all have been there for centuries but he some how gets all these in to those 4 lines which can be understood by any one.

Uravu Irunthal Pirivu Irukum Ulaga Neethe
Vaaravu irunthal Selavu irukum Valkai neethe
Pagal Irunthal Iravu irukum Iraivan Neethee
Palakiya Pin vilakuvathey Manitha Jathi.

Here is the translation for the above lyrics..correct me if I’m wrong.

If there is relation then there is separation thats Worlds rule.
If there is earning then there is Expense thats life’s rule.
If there is day then there is night thats gods rule.
same way Alienating after spending time with you is the Human Race.

I couldn’t find this song any where but if you would like to hear it then please go to the video here and move to 7.25 and you can hear Sirkali singing it a much better way.
