try{use xp;}catch(n crashes;slow;){use Ubuntu;}

Well the title explains it all. After using my IBM Thinkpad R50e for almost 3.7 years after

  1. 10 – 20 times of complete crash downs.
  2. Backing up and recovering every time.
  3. Slow system which wouldn’t allow me to use Eclipse :(   or Dreamweaver or run my fav coldfusion server CF8/Railo 3.
  4. Upgrading my Ram to max 2 gb.

I don’t hate XP but the software’s in this current world has made my laptop work like a 6 moths old Netbook.

All these have forced me to finally try out Ubuntu 9.04 OS instead of XP. All though there was a pretty big learning curve to use Ubuntu but it has been fruitful so far with all my required software running fine without any performance hit. I still have to figure out how to fix the Flash full screen lag issue with Ubuntu 9.04 and my system expect that everything looks gr8.

If you have enough patience,time and old laptop u still want to use please try out Ubuntu out which has gr8 UI.

Thanks to eclipse, cfeclipse, mysql and railo CF engine for their gr8 open source products.

The Ripple Effect

With the United Progressive Alliance – UPA lead by Congress(I) winning the 2009 Indian parlimentary election with a surprise and its ripple effects has started showing up.

Obviously the first place to feel the effect is the closest to the center that’s Srilanka where BBC has reported that Velupillai Prabhakaran leader of LTTE has been killed. Although it could be rumor as usual but pretty much LTTE will be taken of the equation from now on in Srilanka.

But good news LTTE regrets the loss of innocents life ,not able to protect them any more and willing to silence their guns (nice term indeed).

There above statement is like the saying in tamil

kann ketta pin sooriya namash kaaram

which means Praying to the Sun god after losing the eye.

All mayhem over the weekend..

Update – 05/24/2009:

LTTE has finally accepted that Prabhakaran is dead. Hopefully with the end there will be a better solution in srilanka.

Print Preview button missing in Chrome

As I was testing one of my print style sheet in all browsers I found out that Google Chrome (1.0.154.48) doesn’t have a print preview button which is pretty much available in most of the browsers.sad

Did they miss it in the requirement or decided to leave it out like that to stand out of the herd ;)

End of Tax Season 2008…

Generally I procrastinate filing the tax every year but this year I filed it too early considering my standard.

Although I’m not getting much in federal and paying some to CA :( tax its the free e-file feature, sudden interest to file my tax and get the return before federal govt goes bankrupt  ;)   that motivated me to file early.

Thanks to FreeTaxUSA.Com for providing free federal tax return using the coupon code ‘FEDFREE‘.

People say California is on the verge of going bankrupt but still they made to provide this free e-file tool called CalFile which is pretty good. Instead of free e-file California can just remove the state tax itself :twisted: , I wish……..

Both the free e-file option are basic  and it should be good for most of my single friends in H1b or in F1 OPT.

Free aaah Kudutha ……. :lol:

Slumdog Millionaire is Slum

Yes the title says it. Its a really good desi masala movie packed in a nice little tamper proof plastic cup so that it can be cooked instantly in your DVD player.

As I was watching it I was wondering why it got nominated for Grammy and Oscars come on people haven’t you watched a better movie in your language.

I’m still wondering when was the last time Indians talked in Millions we follow the Indian Number system which is lakhs and crores.  The kids playing cricket reminds of  Chennai 28 which was a good movie.

Hell yeah this movie wasn’t  made for Indians it was made for the International community who are curious to know/learn about Mumbai after the November 26,2008 Mumbai attack.

Well there is one thing this movie has is A.R. Rahman but the Jai ho sounds similar to a track from Om Shanti Om and I’m not sure which song it is.

Its good marketing guys but don’t expect this to run this movie in India you know the result.

If only Kamal Hasan learns to market like these guys his Virumandi one of the best movies I have ever seen would have won a national award at least.

If you liked this movie then try watching yet another master piece called Pesum Padam/Pushpak from Kamal.

I’m not Sita – ur not Rama either

I have faced this situation n number of times every where I lived in United states of America whenever there is a talk about India or going to Hindi movies.

I’m going to redirect them to this post to find my answer because I’m tired of telling each of them individually.

There is a wide spread accusation that people from Tamil Nadu (India) don’t speak or hesitate to learn Hindi and they should speak it since its a national language. I can’t talk for the whole tamil speaking people but here is my answer to it

  1. If the need araises then I will learn hindi which I don’t see happening in near future.
  2. I’m too lazy to learn and Hindi would be the last thing I would even consider learning.
  3. I tried learning once hindi as a kid and failed miserably hence I’m staying away from it.
  4. I don’t have to prove my nationality by learning Hindi.
  5. I’m happy watching Hindi movies using sub titles.

No offense guys we can always communicate in english which I beleive every one of my friend knows.

AR.Rehman strikes back with "New York Nagaram"

Once again AR.Rehman has proved he is the best music director & singer with the audio release of “Silunu Oru kadhal“.The song that I’m listening for the last 24hrs is none other than the “New York nagaram” sung by AR.

AR is following the footsteps of his guru Illayaraja in this album also,the songs sung by them becomes a hit first then other songs catch up after sometime.There are exception if its a Rajnikanth movie or a song by SPB,Yesudas these 3 outshine any one.

As far as other songs,”Jilunu Oru Kadhal” is good,other songs are not catchy or memorable,but that’s the usual way with AR music.

Windows Live Writer Beta

I’m using Windows Live Writer Beta now to write this Blog.It connected with my blog pretty easily,just a few clicks and here U start blog.One gr8 feature all Microsoft applications have.My first impression,I like it,its easy,its quick and no more editing HTML tags.WordPress Interface was not good..but Windows Live Writer goes a Mile ahead and clearly wins the race.

Airport Security Issue

I really don’t worry abt the new airline security regulation of not allowing liquids on board the aircraft.Unless the air-carrier promises to provides me..

  1. Good water that doesn’t contain an E-coli Bacteria.I remember studying a article by FDA abt the poor water quality served in flight,they mentioned the quality as bad as water from a lavatary.I don’t want to drink that and get sick during my vacation.
  2. Opti free

They have to provide free lens cleaning solutions for those who travel in the flight for sure.generally people fall asleep during flight and its not advisable to wear contact lenses while sleeping,even if u do,eyes r going to burn once u wake up..so its neccessary for people to remove lenses,without cleaning solution..its going to more painful.

If the airliens can do that for me..I’m pretty much happy..otherwise..airtravel sucks…for sure..
