Carton of Milk – 2$, Nokia N85 – 300$, the joy when the phone works after dropping the N85 in milk – priceless

I really wish I didn’t do this mistake of trying to save 2$ milk carton from falling down and dropping my N85 in to my cup of milk when I was preparing my coffee while I was talking to my bro at the same time.

I did the usual stuff that I usually do when my equipments has water damage like completely dismantle it and let it dry for a day and try it back again. Most of the time it has worked for me and since the phone is from Nokia, the percentage of survival is little higher then other manufactures.

Multitasking has its share of failures like this, may be that’s why apple decided not to include Multitasking in ipad.

Until then I will try to resurrect my old HTC SDA phone which had suffered its own 30 feet drops, water damage and living in freezer for an hour :) and btw it worked all the time without issues. I decided to replace it only when its charger connection got loose which made it harder for me to charge the device.

I hope the N85 can also survive all the sufferings as good as HTC SDA has suffered in my hands. It has gone through a 20 feet drop and made out alive so lets see if it can survive the water damage.

Now I will have to wait for another 24 hrs to figure out if my phone can be revived or not.

Please email/im me if you need to contact me before that.

Yet another quake as I write this post. It shud be easily a 4 and we got after shocks.

Well the phone is working perfectly as of this moment without issue. Thank you Nokia.

Stop Rocking when I’m asleep..

Just woke up to the news on radio that there was a 4.4 earthquake near Los angles and I didn’t even feel a bit  although I see a few entries from Redlands in the did you feel site.

Well gotta move the bed away from the windows, lets hope I do it by next year. May be I should use twitter for these kind of posts..

too many list of things of to do and too sleepy as well..time for a quick nap between the snoozes and blogging..

Amazon S3 isn’t for everyone

Its always been a pain to maintain a  backup of all photos and personal documents. When I heard about Amazon S3 cloud storage with its cheap pricing structure, I was in heaven finally a place I can store my data for eternity for cheap.

But when I started to move my data to Amazon S3 , the reality struck me hard was that

  1. my so called broadband connection which boasts a 512kbps upstream took me more than an hour to push a 200MB file and I have about 10gb of data.
  2. Most of all I can’t even switch to FIOS internet (Verizon) which has better up stream because they don’t have coverage in my locality.
  3. None of the freeware S3 sync applications like S3Fox, cloudberry and S3 Explorer support bandwidth limiting capability on up stream. So they basically occupy the pipeline until the upload is done annoying my room mate who was  trying to figure what the hell’s happening with the connection for like 2 days.

So until I get a better internet connection or smart app that can push data like torrents clients, I will not be able to use Amazon S3 as my primary back up storage.

Amazon S3 back up or file storage isn’t for people who are stuck in the cable world like me.

Windows 7 Vs Kubuntu 9.10 the fight continues..

I recently got a new laptop Lenovo ideapad Y550 which was supposed to come with Windows 7 but came with Vista instead but I already decided that I would use Ubuntu 9.10 to avoid all windows nightmare and started using Kubuntu 9.10 (KDE graphic environment of Ubuntu). I can do a whole podcast on the lenovo issue but I have made my peace.

Setting up an running Kubuntu was the easy part since the installation was seemeless and every thing ran out of the box except

  1. Nvidia GT240m graphics card for which I found the drivers from Nvidia site and spend like another 2 days figuring out how to install them during which I crashed the ubuntu when I removed some packages.
  2. My Audio isn’t audible as vista and my HDMI port doesn’t output audio in Kubuntu which works fine in Vista. Looks like a driver problem.

I have searched through out the net for the audio issue and no one seems to have the right answer that would resolve my issue so I’m actually considering moving to Windows 7 even though I haven’t gotten my hands dirty with it.

I pretty much use this laptop as my home entertainment system which would need the HDMI audio function. I still have 3 more weeks before Lenovo sends me Windows 7 disk to figure out the issue. If not then I guess I will be back to Windows world once again until then I will switch between Vista/Kubuntu.

Believe me Ubuntu is a monster once tamed it’s a pretty good dog and I like it a lot.

BTW Vista sucks pretty bad how the hell can I kill a process from task manager? I’m not even sure how people worked with vista.

I’m a novice in the linux world so if any one has better ideas to fix this issue it would be gr8.

Bitten by the ATT data bug

I was caught unaware, unprepared and without guard when it bit me.

Yes, today I was bitten by a huge bill of 120$ of data charge for 12,000KB of data for my ATT wireless phone service.  So thats roughly a penny per kilobyte which is one of the costliest KB that I have ever paid for in my life.

Probably my new phone N85 should have connected to the internet without my knowledge during the initial days of buying it.

If you don’t intend to use data over wireless please call your provider immediately and block/opt-out of it A.S.A.P because one day or the other you will be bitten by this bug and it will be painful.

BTW my friends have warned me about this for a some time but I didn’t care about it much but today I feel the pain.

You have been warned !!!!!

BTW this wouldn’t happen in India because data plans are too cheap then here.

Change of theme

Its been quite a while since I switched my wordpress theme to a different one. I changed some time in march and there were some issues with IE browser so reverted.

This time I have decided not to change the theme for IE issues alone. I’m done playing games for IE.

As far as the new theme its still boring as the old one but this blog is ain’t for some media blog so I will live with this one for some time.

Too much of rambling for a simple theme change.. so the 1 or 2 users who read this boring post :) please leave a comment if you have any UI issues other than IE seriously..

try{use xp;}catch(n crashes;slow;){use Ubuntu;}

Well the title explains it all. After using my IBM Thinkpad R50e for almost 3.7 years after

  1. 10 – 20 times of complete crash downs.
  2. Backing up and recovering every time.
  3. Slow system which wouldn’t allow me to use Eclipse :(   or Dreamweaver or run my fav coldfusion server CF8/Railo 3.
  4. Upgrading my Ram to max 2 gb.

I don’t hate XP but the software’s in this current world has made my laptop work like a 6 moths old Netbook.

All these have forced me to finally try out Ubuntu 9.04 OS instead of XP. All though there was a pretty big learning curve to use Ubuntu but it has been fruitful so far with all my required software running fine without any performance hit. I still have to figure out how to fix the Flash full screen lag issue with Ubuntu 9.04 and my system expect that everything looks gr8.

If you have enough patience, time and old laptop u still want to use please try out Ubuntu out which has gr8 UI.

Thanks to eclipse, cfeclipse, mysql and railo CF engine for their gr8 open source products.

2 down 3 more to go

Yes people it doesn’t happen all time to me but this year 2009 I’m walking the road that I decided to go through 4 months ago.

Now I will be happy to strike off 2 items from the list.

  1. Lose that 10 pounds that I gained last year. I have already started working on it and lost 3 7 pounds in a month so I expect to lose that 10 by end of April 2009. Its slow but works for me.
  2. Get my parents to USA one that has been failing for the last 2 years.
  3. Jump into Adobe Flex.
  4. Talk/read less about the srilankan ethnic issue which I was doing a lot during 2008. Its just too dragging and I have strong appetite to read about it so I’m planning to reduce that appetite.
  5. Increase my blogs viewers base and posts more on tech rather than on politics. It would be hard since 2009 is a election year in India.

I thought loosing the weight would be the hardest but eventually that was not hard but to control  my appetite to read the Srilanka issue was the hardest. Still I read about it here and then but I have completely stopped my urge to blog about it.

With elections coming up in India Google sends in more traffic for the electoral list search post.

Getting my parents here is still a mystery :)

Still 8 more months to go and I hope I will be done with the other 2 as well.

“Start from where u r then where u want to be”..

How to identify and delete duplicate records from sql table

Well I’m sure any SQL developer out there would have encountered a problem where the duplicate records in a table have to eliminated for some reasons.

I recently encountered a similar situation where I had to remove the duplicate user name from a table with just one simple query . Here is how I did it:

Here is my tbl_username table having the following columns UID( auto increment primary key), uname (varchar(100)), fname (varchar(100)):

UID Uname fname
1 xyz xyz
2 xyz xyz
3 abc abc
4 qwerty qwerty
5 qwerty qwerty

We would have to remove the duplicate user names in order to do that we first build a sub query that picks up the uname and max id of the duplicate records.

Select uname, max(UID) as latestUID from tbl_username group by uname having count(uname) > 1

Result:

Uname latestUID
xyz 2
qwerty 5

By using the max function we can pick the latest entry to be deleted if you like to pick the lowest use the min() function.

Well if you have got this then its pretty much simple to get the build another sub query on top of this to get the unique IDs and then delete it as usual.

delete from tbl_username
where UID in
(
select latestUID from (
Select uname, max(UID) as latestUID from tbl_username group by uname having count(uname) > 1
)
)

Now the table has the following data in it

UID Uname fname
1 xyz xyz
3 abc abc
4 qwerty qwerty

Well this way of deleting would only work if the table uses an integer as a primary key.

This is the cure but prevention of this kind of situation can be resolved by just using unique keys on the Uname field.

Prevention is always better than cure so grab a SQL book if you have done this mistake.

Square root day – 03/03/2009

Well I was reading this CNET news which was about square root day falling tomorrow i.e. 03/03/09 which occurs only 9 times in a century.

Tuesday is Square Root Day, a rare holiday that occurs when the day and the month are both the square root of the last two digits of the current year. Numerically, March 3, 2009, can be expressed as 3/3/09, or mathematically as √9 = 3, or 3² = 3 × 3 = 9.

I know its absurd but I have my own reasons to post about it.

The following are the square root days if you have failed in second grade

  1. 01/01/2001
  2. 02/02/2004
  3. 03/03/2009
  4. 04/04/2016
  5. 05/05/2025
  6. 06/06/2036
  7. 07/07/2049
  8. 08/08/2064
  9. 09/09/2081
